FLOORING CHAT:: FAUX WOOD, PORCELAIN TILE VS. LUXURY VINYL TILE

THE DOWN LOW ON WOOD FLOORING IMPOSTERS

We live in a time where we want things in our homes to be low maintenance, simple and practical. Able to take the daily abuse of pets, kids running with cleats on and red wine spills from your mother-in-law. While everything in your home can't be completely bullet proof, picking a durable flooring material is usually high on everyones priority list.

Most people love the warmth of wood floors, but not the maintenance factor attached to it. However, that all changed, about ten years ago, when these amazing little wood imposters started making their popular way on the market. People were in awe of the idea of having the wood look on their floor, without the worry of actual wood care! There are really two types of flooring options for faux wood: porcelain tile or Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT). I'm often asked my opinion of one vs another, my answer is always the same across the board, so I decided to break it down for you.

QUITE SIMPLY, I ALWAYS VOTE LVT. HERE IS WHY:

  • Real wood floors do not have grout lines - to me the biggest giveaway on the porcelain tile movement is the grout lines, that is one big thing that blows this faux woods cover. With LVT the product is installed butted right next to each other, taking away any need for grout! Which in the end result, makes this faux wood much more realistic than faux wood tile. Plus - who actually likes to clean grout??

  • Warmer to the touch - LVT is some form of plastic, pvc or other product (often recycled), it is much warmer to the foot than a cold tile floor.

  • Better sound quality - because this isn't a hard surface like tile, it doesn't have that echo bounce happening throughout the space.

  • Easier to repair - if by some chance you do have to repair a plank (although highly unlikely), don't fret, and educated installer can heat up that plank, pop it out and put another in, no tearing up a whole floor here.

  • Other key benefits - its waterproof, UV rated, slip resistant and incredibly easy to clean!

Here are a few spaces where we have used LVT in projects, this product is so versatile, we are finding use for it in residential and commercial spaces.

As you can see, I'm a big fan of LVT, the application is nearly limitless, the end result is always beautiful, durable and a huge bang for your buck.

I've installed it everywhere from residential projects to commercial settings and beach hotels. While the initial floor prep might be a bit tedious and a nominal expense upfront, the longevity, ease of maintenance and aesthetic you will have with your new luxury vinyl tile floor pays for itself in no time!

MAISON & OBJET | DECO OFF - PARIS RECAP, PART I

A WEEK IN PARIS FOR MAISON & OBJET | DECO OFF PART I - AREA RUGS

Earlier, in January, we were lucky enough to spend a week in Paris, it was such a dream! It has been on my design bucket list to attend the trade shows in Paris, and they lived up to everything I thought they would be!

I really love going to trade shows, it's such a great way to discover new vendors, artisans and emerging talent. Building new connections is so vital for a successful interior design business. We truly love to discover new talent and stay ahead of the trends with our projects.

Here are a few things that really spoke to me at the shows, so hard to narrow it down to only a few, but don't you worry your pretty little head, there will be a lot more of Paris on the blog in the future too! So I decided to break it down into different segments, to not overwhelm you at once.

AREA RUGS: There were quite a lot of area rugs throughout the show, but these beauties really stood out to me. Their modern design and muted color palettes really showcased well. I couldn't stop staring at this first one, I thought it was such an interesting design, I could picture it easily in a striking hallway.

And this rug, well this, THIS was MY lucky find! You will not believe the steal I got on this pretty! I was in an antique store down the street from the flat we were staying in, and it was crumbled up underneath a console table, the pattern and colors stuck out to me. I absolutely had to take it home with me. So this my friends, is the designer and her beautiful new rug selfie, because that totally makes sense, right?!

I know what you are currently thinking, how in the world did she get this home?! To answer your question, yes, you can check in an area rug at the airport. You might just get a few sideways stares...

Here she is in my home, I really love the color and pattern and the green just matched perfectly with my velvet sofa!

There were really a million and one amazing area rugs to drool over at the trade shows and indpendant storefronts. I wish I would have taken more photos to share.

Which tends to lean toward your personal style? More modern or the antique find that I stumbled upon?

With love and design-y dreams,

Custom Art Project : : Clearwater Beach Map

Vibrant and Fun Watercolors Meets Functional Artwork

Being the resident artist here at LGD gives me some pretty cool opportunities with clients, most recently one of those being for the newly designed Hotel Cabana on Clearwater Beach. LGD did an incredible job exuding a modern, coastal but still minimalistic feel of relaxation throughout the design, much of which parallels my own artistic style in my coastal watercolor artwork.

When the owner commissioned me to create a 3' x 4' map to hang in their entry way for every guest to see, I was beyond excited! Custom maps have really become a passion project of mine, and a way to more deeply explore the design and architecture of different buildings in structures throughout Florida. Aside from these maps becoming a gorgeous piece of 100% custom artwork, they also serve a functional purpose - helping guests navigate their way around a new city or area, all while viewing beautiful illustrations.

BOHO CHIC NURSERY

DREAMY LITTLE SPACES

Excited would be an understatement when we were approached by a long time client and friend to design their second daughters nursery!

When we found out our client wanted a bohemian vibe- visions of tassel, textures, muted tones, and layers emerged. Just enough detail to create a cozy yet playful space!

As a mom of two little girls, tiny human spaces have always been my favorite. However, creating a space where mother and daughter will bond and memories will be made is fulfilling in so many wonderful ways. A beautiful space is great but all the laughs and smiles which will be shared within it... well thats what makes it perfect :)

Till next time!
