DESIGN CHAT:: WHEN IS A GOOD TIME TO HIRE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?

WHAT PHASE IN YOUR PROJECT DOES IT MAKE SENSE TO HIRE A PROFESSIONAL?

It's happening. You are finally doing it. Building the home of your dreams, remodeling to make it finally your dream place or building out your place of work. Pretty exciting, right? I bet that to do list just got a little large - and it's possible your Pinterest boards may be starting to overwhelm you.

So now the big question.

"Do I get an interior designer involved in my project? And if I do, when? And what all do they exactly do?"

Well, my friend, I am here to help you with that question. While I wish that the answer was an easy cut and dry answer, unfortunately it is not. However, with some of these tips, it might help you decide when it is good for you to think of a professional.

In this industry, every project is truly different. Every. Single. Project. Which in my opinion, is SO great! Why have your project be like anyone else? After all, it is your space so let's make sure it's created with you in mind.

Chances are, you probably fall in one of the following categories:

  1. Building a new property from the ground up.
  2. Remodeling an existing property.

Here are three main questions you need to ask yourself when thinking of your project:

  1. Do you want a designer to consult on the entire property (floor plan, finishes, lighting and furnishings)
  2. Do you want a designer to just consult on finishes and no floor plan adjustments or furnishings?
  3. Do you want a designer to just do the furnishings and soft coverings (furniture, area rugs, drapery, art etc.)

The honest answer is, the sooner you can get a designer in on the project, the likelihood of saving money and any mistakes is pretty high. We really act as your advocate on the project and often think of things that may have not crossed your mind, yet!

Finish selections only, ideal for your project?

Interior finish selections for a residential property | Lisa Gilmore Design

So let's say, you feel you fit in category #2 - your working on a property and you want a designer to select all the finishes of the space, really make the bones of it shine. It's really a good idea to get the designer involved once the architectural plans have been finalized. Finalized, being the key word. You want your designer to spend time picking finishes on a space that is ready to go, not still in the idea phase. However, it's very important to call your designer in right at this sweet spot. Don't wait until the project has broke ground or demo day has started - you will find everyone frantically running in circles trying to find things in stock and ready to go. So ideally, prior to permits being pulled, that way they have time to source the best selections and lead time will not be as much of a concern.

Another thing to remember is to try to pick all of your finishes and selections as efficiently and quickly as possible. It's best for the designer to be able to hand off a complete specification book to your building team, so they can hit the ground running.

THE WHOLE SHEBANG MORE YOUR SPEEED?

If you decide that you want a professional with you every step of the way, then certainly getting involved with a designer early on is best for everyone involved. Your interior designer can help consult on the actual layout and design of your home before drawings are approved for permit.

It's really important to think of this kind of project in three phases:

  1. Initial design: layout, flow, voice of the home.
  2. Hard finish selections (tile, flooring, cabinetry, hardware, moldings, etc.)
  3. Soft finishes (furniture, drapery, art, area rugs, etc.)

If you break your project into these phases, it will be much easier to take on, prioritize and organize with your design team.

In the beginning really focus on the style of the home and finishes, once those are selected jump into furnishings and all the extra beautiful things that make your personality pop!

If you feel like you've got all the finish selections under control, but really need help pulling together the end result and really making your personality shine - then soft furnishings help, is the service you need!

A lot of people, unfortunately, make the mistake of waiting on this phase too long. They get wrapped up in the details of building / remodeling, then before you know it, the property is slated to be complete in three months and the light bulb goes off "Hey! I need furniture for this new space!" The sad truth is, that most furnishings take much longer than three months to get into your home. Not only is the average lead time on many product 6-10 weeks depending, but you want to give your designer time to actually design! So to be on the safe side, I would say about the eight months to completion date, is the ideal time to start working on furnishings with your designer, but really a year out is an even better sweet spot!

At the end of the day, the message I'm trying to get across to you is, really think about the role you want your designer to have on your project, you really want to give your designer the proper amount of time to really get creative and come up with a fantastic design for you, not limit the resources due to time, and let your designer really flex their creative muscles! All great things take time - and design truly shouldn't be rushed, but well planned and in the end, genuinely loved and enjoyed!

DESIGN PROJECT:: CASUAL OFFICE STYLE WITH AN INDUSTRIAL FLAIR

THE HOTH: TO "HITTEM OVER THE HEAD" (WITH AWESOMENESS)

We are very excited and humbled to be nominated by the Tampa Bay Business Journal for "2018 Coolest Office Spaces!" We were lucky enough to be nominated for two projects within this category. No matter  the outcome we are honored to get the opportunity to work with great people who love our passion for design, and trust us to make their space a direct reflection of their brand and work culture.

The Hoth, is an expert SEO  company located in the heart of Downtown St. Pete. With out of this world views overlooking the bay, and a red hairy monster as their mascot- we needed to simplify the design but  make it significant. Using a combination of subtle tones, metal, wood, brick and one kick-ass graffiti wall covering spanning the hallway, this space certainly energizes this team everyday!

DESIGN CHAT:: HOW TO STYLE YOUR BED

THE BEST WAYS TO DRESS YOUR BED

This is a subject that we have conversations with clients about often, dressing your bed. A lot of work goes into your interior and creating the perfect serene space for you to rest your head. Now the big question - what to rest your head on.

There are so many styles, colors, thread counts, duvets, throw blankets, throw pillows, dust ruffles... oy vey! The list goes on and on, it can certainly be daunting.

I remember when I first started my design career in 2006 (yikes, where does time go?!) more trim, more bedding, more details, more, more, more and more pillows was quite the trend. Now, well now, these days I've certainly transformed into a more streamlined bedding type of gal. For many reasons, but the one big reason really is...

WHO HAS TIME FOR ALL THOSE PILLOWS?!

So here are a few of my favorite dressed beds from our projects to get your bedding dreams rolling.

1. TAILORED AND SIMPLE

For this bedroom, we were inspired by the tailored appeal of mens suiting. Monochromatic gray sheets, paired with sexy stripes and muted textures make for a strong but peaceful place for this busy CEO to rest after his long day at the office. We kept it super simple with large king shams and one long bolster to adorn the stripe duvet.

2. COZY TEXTURES AND SIMPLE PATTERNS

This is the perfect little cozy haven. We had fun mixing patterns and textures with this one, but the outcome was not overpowering at all. The modern matelasse pattern works very well with the geometric embroidered drapery and single throw pillow.

3. NAUTICAL INSPIRED GUEST BEDROOM

With this guest bedroom we wanted to create a relaxing space for guests to enjoy while visiting this sunny Old Northeast historic home. So a nod to the nautical life was kind of a no brainer. Keeping this space light and airy but mixing some patterns makes it inviting and not pretentious. Guests can really relax and feel welcomed here, without a lot of stress of messing up too many pillows or having to make an overly thought out bed every morning.

4. BLACK AND WHITE CONTEMPORARY

Simplicity was certainly key with this black and white contemporary master bedroom. Low maintenance and high contrast make this master bedroom striking. Black sheets with two simple king pillows stacked on each other - done and done. Sometimes keeping it really basic are best for the space and lifestyle of the homeowner. Paired with the bold geometric drapery, we think it does just the trick.

4. BEACHY MINIMALIST

With Hotel Cabana Clearwater Beach, easy peasy was the name of our game! We want guests to feel refreshed, bright and airy when they walk into their suites - and the service staff needs it to be functional, simple and able to turn over quickly. So white bedding and two stacked pillows was the perfect combination for this modern minimalist beach hotel.

5. TRADITIONAL AND TEXTURED

For this detached mother in law suite apartment guest room, rich and cozy was our goal. This homeowner loves cozy moody spaces, antique rugs and things with a story. So the bedding was kept rather simple, to compliment the area rug, floral drapery and antiques we styled the space with. Monochromatic pattern mixing, herringbone and a traditional matelasse pattern. Simple pillows and a nice throw to keep guests cozy on those rare chilly Saint Petersburg nights!

All in all, you can see we tend to be a bit more on the simple side with our bedding choices. At the end of the day, its really what matches up with your lifestyle and what creates the most relaxing environment for you! So tell us - what is YOUR bedding style?

DESIGN INSPIRATION: PARISIAN DOORS

If windows are the eyes of a home, than the door is the mouth. And personally, I like a great, bold lipstick! Lipstick can change the mood of the day and I believe the color of your door to your home is the same.

While in Paris, along the grey tone backsplash of historic buildings, I noticed that Parisians are not afraid to punch up their entry ways with color.  The architecture provided large, heavy, wood doors in bright colors with shiny hardware.

Here are a few of our favorites that I would love to incorporate into Florida living:

RED:  A bold red against the grey backdrop is fun and vibrant but also classic.

NAVY: I love everything NAVY so why not put it on a door!  It's rich, smooth, and is a subtle but stylish choice.  Navy blue looks great with shiny bronze hardware.

TEAL/TURQUOISE:  If you are looking for something a little bit more out of the box than navy blue or black but not quite as bold as red. A teal door is the perfect compromise.  Teal equals happy and inviting!

Like all great trips, Paris has inspired all of us at Lisa Gilmore Design.  For me, I have decide to punch up the color on my drab, black entry door.  I'm thinking a glossy navy blue or going for a fun coral with a nice, brass knocker.
